On Friday evening, Poland and Austria face off in what could be a decisive gameweek two encounter in Group D of Euro2024. 

Both teams, having tasted defeat in their openers, now stand at a crossroads. This game could be the turning point, determining whether they exit the group stage or secure a spot in the last-16 of the competition. 

Poland kicked off their EURO 2024 campaign in Group D with a narrow 2-1 defeat against the Netherlands. The result was slightly disappointing, as Michal Probierz’s team headed into their group opener on the back of an eight-game unbeaten run in all international competitions. 

However, Poland’s recent record in the European Championships is poor. They are now winless in five games in the competition, having lost three of their last four matches.  

Star striker Robert Lewandowski sat out the opener against the Dutch. However, the Barcelona star will hope for a recall to the starting line-up as Poland looks to pick up a potentially crucial victory. 

Austria produced a battling display against France in their opening game, but they suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat courtesy of an own goal from defender Maximilian Wober. 

In many ways, the opening game was never the priority for Austria, as their opponents are among the favourites to win the competition. This game would always be more relevant for Ralf Rangnick’s team’s chance of qualifying for the knockout stages. 

However, the defeat against Les Bleus ended a seven-game unbeaten international run. Their record of five wins in that recent solid run of form is still a respectable one. 

The head-to-head record between these two teams is close. The two teams have recently met three times in internationals, with Poland recording one win and two games ending in draws. All three meetings have been cagey, low-scoring games, producing under 2.5 goals.
